Learning Experience Design

A great learning platform depends on more than technology. Learners also need well-structured courses, activities that work, and a clear path through the student experience. OpenCraft’s Learning Experience Design service brings together learning strategy, UX/UI, product thinking, and Open edX platform expertise to create learning experiences that work for both learners and the organizations delivering them.

What is Learning Experience Design?

Learning Experience Design focuses on how learning is structured, experienced, and delivered within your platform.

We help turn your learning goals and existing content into a clear, engaging experience that works effectively within the Open edX platform. This includes enhancing the structure of the course, learner journeys, activities, assessments, interactions, navigation, and progression.
The goal is not to create more content. Instead, it is to make the content you already have more effective for the people who interact with it.

Why It Matters?

Even a strong curriculum can lead to a poor learner experience. When learning design, UX/UI, and platform settings are made separately, several issues can arise:

  • Course structures and learning activities may not align with the platform or intended learning outcomes.
  • Learner journeys can become confusing, resulting in poor UX/UI and engagement.
  • Learning requirements may emerge late, leading to reworking of the curriculum, changes in the curriculum’s scope, and unnecessary development costs.

Bringing Learning Experience Design early in the process helps address these issues before they become too costly to fix.

Our Approach

Product Thinking Applied to Learning
We approach learning as a product experience, rather than simply as a collection of content. We consider learner needs, engagement, interaction, usability, and the goals of the organization delivering the experience.
Designed for the Open edX® Platform
We understand the capabilities and constraints of the platform, as well as how learning decisions translate into real platform behavior. This understanding allows us to design experiences that can be delivered effectively through the platform, rather than just looking good on paper.
Learning and UX Combined
Learning and user experience are closely connected. Our team combines learning strategy, UX/UI, interaction design, and Open edX expertise to create experiences that are clear, engaging, and usable.
Fewer Surprises and Less Rework
Making learning and platform decisions collaboratively leads to better scoping, more accurate estimates, and fewer surprises during development.
Built With Your Content Team
We collaborate with the people who own your content rather than replace them. We provide structure, guidance, and design expertise while ensuring that content ownership remains with your organization.
Designed to Evolve Over Time
We help establish structures and patterns that your team can understand and maintain long after the initial engagement.

Design That Works in the Real World

The best learning experience is not designed in isolation. It has to work for your learners, your content team, and the technology that delivers it. That’s why we make learning, product, and platform decisions together, so each supports the others.

The result is a learning experience that works from day one and gives your team a foundation to build on.

What We Don't Do

Learning Experience Design is not the same as creating educational content. We work with your existing content and content teams. Our role is to design the experience around that content, not to become your content production team.

We do not provide:

  • Course content writing or rewriting
  • Full content production
  • Copy-heavy editorial work
  • Subject matter expertise

If your organization already has a content team, that is a strength, not an issue. We will work alongside them to translate their expertise into a platform-ready learning experience.

Is Learning Experience Design for You?

We work best with organizations that already have developed, or are developing, meaningful educational content and want to improve how learners experience it:

  • Universities and higher education institutions developing online programs.
  • Governments and public sector organizations delivering structured learning.
  • Enterprise learning teams building scalable learning program.

We are probably not the right fit for you if:

  • You need someone to write your course content from scratch.
  • You are looking for a traditional instructional design or content production agency.
